The MikroTik CRS304-4XG-IN is a compact 10 Gigabit Ethernet switch designed for high-speed copper networking, server connectivity, storage networks, workstation uplinks and network aggregation. It provides 4 × 10G RJ45 Ethernet ports together with 1 × Gigabit Ethernet management port in a compact, passively cooled enclosure.
The four high-speed interfaces support 10GBASE-T as well as lower Ethernet speeds, allowing the CRS304-4XG-IN to integrate modern 10Gbps devices with existing Gigabit and multi-gigabit infrastructure.
The main feature of the CRS304-4XG-IN is its four 10G RJ45 Ethernet ports. Unlike SFP+ switches that require optical transceivers or DAC cables, the CRS304 provides native copper RJ45 connectivity for compatible 10Gbps devices.
The high-speed ports support multiple Ethernet speeds, allowing the switch to work with different generations of network equipment.
The CRS304-4XG-IN is well suited to environments where servers, workstations, NAS systems or storage appliances provide RJ45-based 10GbE interfaces.
For example, multiple 10G-capable servers can be connected directly to the four high-speed ports while the Gigabit Ethernet interface provides management connectivity or an uplink to another network device.
The CRS304-4XG-IN is not limited to 10Gbps operation. Its copper interfaces support multiple Ethernet speeds, allowing compatible devices to establish links at the highest mutually supported rate.
This makes the switch useful when a network contains a combination of Gigabit, 2.5Gbps, 5Gbps and 10Gbps Ethernet equipment.
The CRS304-4XG-IN supports both MikroTik RouterOS and SwOS. This provides flexibility in how the switch is deployed.
SwOS is designed specifically for managed switching and provides a straightforward web-based interface for Layer 2 configuration. RouterOS provides a broader networking feature set for deployments requiring additional routing and network-management functionality.
When configured with SwOS, the CRS304 can provide managed-switch features suitable for professional Ethernet networks.
This makes the CRS304 suitable for networks where administrators need more control than a basic unmanaged switch can provide.
RouterOS can be selected when the deployment requires advanced network configuration beyond standard Layer 2 switching. Depending on the configuration and network architecture, RouterOS provides capabilities for VLANs, routing, firewalling, monitoring and other networking functions.
The dual-boot architecture therefore allows the CRS304-4XG-IN to be used either as a focused managed switch or as a more feature-rich RouterOS networking platform.
In addition to the four 10G RJ45 ports, the CRS304-4XG-IN includes one 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet port. This interface can be used for management, network connectivity or an additional Ethernet link according to the deployment.
The dedicated Gigabit interface also provides a practical way to manage the switch without consuming one of the four high-speed 10G ports.
The CRS304-4XG-IN uses a compact metal enclosure with passive cooling. The fanless design eliminates conventional mechanical cooling fans and makes the switch suitable for desktop installations, network cabinets, server rooms and other environments where low acoustic noise is desirable.
The compact enclosure is particularly useful where a full-size rackmount switch would provide more capacity than the installation requires.
Because the CRS304-4XG-IN uses RJ45 10GBASE-T interfaces, it can be integrated into copper-based Ethernet infrastructure using suitable twisted-pair cabling.
For 10Gbps operation, cable category, distance, termination quality and installation conditions should be considered. Actual link speed is determined by the capabilities of both connected devices and the deployed cabling.
The CRS304-4XG-IN can be deployed in a variety of high-speed Ethernet environments.
The CRS304-4XG-IN uses native RJ45 copper ports rather than SFP+ cages. This makes it particularly convenient when the connected servers, workstations or storage systems already have RJ45-based 10GbE network adapters.
With an SFP+ switch, users may need a compatible SFP+ transceiver, DAC or AOC. With the CRS304, a compatible Ethernet cable can be connected directly to the RJ45 port.
