Description

MikroTik CRS112-8G-4S-IN 8-Port Gigabit Ethernet Switch

MikroTik CRS112-8G-4S-IN is a compact Cloud Router Switch designed for managed Ethernet and fiber network deployments. It combines 8 × 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet ports with 4 × SFP cages, providing both copper and fiber connectivity in a single desktop/rackmount switch.

The CRS112-8G-4S-IN runs MikroTik RouterOS with a Level 5 license and provides extensive switching and network-management capabilities. It is based on a 400MHz single-core QCA8511 platform with 128MB RAM and 16MB Flash storage. MikroTik currently lists the model as discontinued, so it is best positioned for customers specifically looking for this established CRS model or compatible available stock.

8 Gigabit Ethernet Ports

The main copper interface of the MikroTik CRS112-8G-4S-IN consists of eight auto-negotiating 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet ports. These ports can be used to connect computers, servers, access points, routers, IP cameras, wireless infrastructure and other network equipment.

Because the ports support Gigabit Ethernet, the CRS112 can serve as a central access or aggregation switch in small and medium network installations where both copper and fiber connectivity are required.

4 SFP Fiber Ports

In addition to the eight RJ45 Gigabit ports, CRS112-8G-4S-IN includes four SFP cages. MikroTik documentation states that these interfaces are compatible with 1.25G SFP modules. They can therefore be used for fiber uplinks, building-to-building links, network aggregation or connections to compatible fiber infrastructure.

These are standard SFP interfaces, not 10G SFP+ ports. The actual fiber speed and distance depend on the selected compatible SFP transceiver and the installed fiber infrastructure.

Gigabit Copper and Fiber in One Switch

The combination of eight Gigabit Ethernet ports and four SFP ports makes the CRS112-8G-4S-IN useful when a network requires both copper access ports and optical uplinks.

For example, the eight RJ45 ports can connect local network equipment while one or more SFP interfaces provide fiber connectivity toward another switch, building or aggregation point.

RouterOS Managed Switch

The CRS112-8G-4S-IN runs MikroTik RouterOS and includes a Level 5 license. RouterOS provides configuration options for switching, VLANs, bridges, routing, firewall-related functions and other supported network-management features.

The device is configured by default as a switch with its Ethernet and SFP interfaces bridged together. Administrators can modify the configuration according to the network architecture.

Hardware Switching Capability

The CRS112 is based around the QCA8511-AL1C switch chip. Its Layer 2 switching hardware provides high aggregate switching capacity relative to the relatively modest CPU used for software-based functions.

MikroTik’s published test results show up to approximately 12 Gbps Layer 1 throughput and up to approximately 24 Gbps Layer 1 switching capacity under its specified non-blocking Layer 2 test methodology. Actual performance depends on traffic type, packet size and configuration.

Switching vs Routing Performance

The CRS112-8G-4S-IN should primarily be considered a managed switch. Its hardware switching capability is considerably stronger than its CPU-based routing performance.

MikroTik’s published Ethernet tests show approximately 582.9 Mbps bridging throughput and approximately 564.7 Mbps routing throughput with 1518-byte packets under a specific test configuration without additional filtering or queue features. With additional RouterOS processing such as firewall rules or queues, throughput can be significantly lower.

For this reason, the CRS112 is best deployed with switching functions handled by the switch chip, while demanding routing, firewall or broadband gateway workloads should be assigned to a more powerful router.

Passive PoE-In

Ethernet port 1 supports passive PoE-in. The device can accept power through its first Ethernet port within the supported voltage range, providing an alternative to the DC power input.

MikroTik specifies a 10–57V DC input range. Both DC jack and PoE input can be connected simultaneously and operate in failover mode, with the higher-voltage source acting as the main power source.

Flexible Power Input

The CRS112 supports power through its DC jack as well as passive PoE-in. This gives network administrators flexibility when installing the switch in different network environments.

The published maximum power consumption is approximately 10–13.5W depending on the referenced MikroTik specification document and measurement condition. For installation planning, the current product documentation should be used for the exact power budget.

Compact Desktop and Rackmount Design

The CRS112-8G-4S-IN uses a compact metal desktop-style enclosure measuring approximately 200 × 143 × 44 mm. Rackmount ears are included, allowing the device to be installed in a compatible rackmount environment.

The compact size makes it suitable for network cabinets, server rooms, office networks and small aggregation installations where a full-size 1U switch may not be necessary.

Passive Cooling

The switch uses passive cooling, eliminating the need for an internal fan. This can be useful in office and network environments where low acoustic noise is desirable.

MikroTik specifies a tested ambient operating temperature range of -40°C to +70°C. Despite the wide temperature specification, the user manual identifies the product as intended for indoor installation and advises keeping it away from water and humidity.

RJ45 Serial Console

The CRS112 includes an RJ45 serial console port for management and recovery purposes. The console can be useful when network access is unavailable or when administrators need direct access to the device during troubleshooting.

The documented default serial settings are 115200 baud, 8 data bits, 1 stop bit and no parity.

VLAN and Network Segmentation

With RouterOS, the CRS112 can be configured for VLAN-based network segmentation and managed switching. VLANs can be used to separate departments, services, guest traffic, management traffic, surveillance systems or other network segments.

The exact VLAN architecture should be designed according to the requirements of the connected router, switches and endpoints. Hardware offloading should be considered when configuring VLAN and bridge features for optimal switching performance.

Suitable Applications

  • Managed Gigabit Ethernet switching
  • Small and medium business networks
  • Fiber uplink aggregation
  • Building-to-building network connectivity
  • Campus network access switching
  • Server and workstation connectivity
  • IP surveillance network aggregation
  • Wireless access point aggregation
  • ISP and enterprise network access layers
  • VLAN-based network segmentation
  • RouterOS networking laboratories

CRS112-8G-4S-IN for Fiber Network Uplinks

When a network contains several Gigabit copper endpoints and requires fiber connectivity toward another location, the CRS112 can provide a convenient combination of RJ45 and SFP interfaces.

For example, a local network can use the eight Gigabit Ethernet ports for access devices while the SFP ports provide optical uplinks to another switch or network segment. The required SFP module should be selected according to the fiber type, wavelength, distance and connected equipment.

CRS112 for Small Business Networks

For a small business, the CRS112 can provide managed Gigabit switching with the additional flexibility of four SFP interfaces. RouterOS allows network administrators to implement VLANs, bridge configurations and other supported network-management features.

However, because the product is based on an older 400MHz single-core platform and is currently listed by MikroTik as discontinued, customers requiring a new-generation switch should evaluate current CRS alternatives. The CRS112 remains relevant where this exact model or existing infrastructure compatibility is required.
