Description

MikroTik CRS310-1G-5S-4S+IN 10G Fiber Switch

The MikroTik CRS310-1G-5S-4S+IN is a compact indoor managed switch designed for high-speed fiber connectivity, ISP networks, small offices, enterprise infrastructure, server connectivity and network aggregation. It combines 5 × 1G SFP ports, 4 × 10G SFP+ ports and 1 × Gigabit Ethernet port in a 1U rackmount-friendly chassis.

Based on the Marvell 98DX226S switch platform, the CRS310 provides hardware-offloaded switching functions including VLAN filtering and selected Layer 3 capabilities. It runs RouterOS v7 and can also operate with SwitchOS, giving network administrators flexibility depending on their deployment requirements.

CRS310-1G-5S-4S+IN Port Configuration

Interface Quantity Purpose
1G SFP 5 Gigabit fiber connectivity
10G SFP+ 4 10 Gigabit fiber or DAC/AOC connectivity
10/100/1000 Ethernet 1 Gigabit management and network connectivity
RJ45 Serial Console 1 Local configuration and recovery

The combination of five 1G SFP interfaces and four 10G SFP+ interfaces makes this switch particularly useful where existing Gigabit fiber infrastructure needs to connect to a higher-speed 10G aggregation layer. The RJ45 Ethernet port is directly connected to the switch chip and supports Gigabit Ethernet speeds.

10G SFP+ Fiber Connectivity

The four 10G SFP+ ports can be used for high-speed fiber uplinks, server connections, storage networking, aggregation links and inter-switch connections. Compatible SFP+ optics, direct attach cables and active optical cables can be selected according to the required distance and network topology.

For fiber deployments extending beyond the practical limits of copper Ethernet, the CRS310 provides a compact way to aggregate multiple optical links while maintaining a dedicated 10G connectivity layer. This makes it suitable for ISP access networks, enterprise distribution networks and fiber-based campus infrastructure.

5 × 1G SFP Fiber Ports

The five 1G SFP ports provide Gigabit fiber connectivity for access switches, wireless infrastructure, remote network segments, ISP links and other compatible optical devices.

Using both 1G SFP and 10G SFP+ interfaces in the same switch allows organizations to connect existing Gigabit fiber infrastructure to a faster 10G aggregation network without requiring every connected device to immediately migrate to 10 Gigabit Ethernet.

Hardware-Offloaded VLAN Switching

The MikroTik CRS310-1G-5S-4S+IN supports hardware-offloaded VLAN filtering through its Marvell switch chip. This allows VLAN-based network segmentation to be handled efficiently by the switching hardware instead of relying entirely on the CPU.

It can therefore be used for environments requiring separate VLANs for departments, management networks, servers, wireless access points, ISP subscribers or other logical network segments. MikroTik documentation lists up to 128 ACL rules and up to 16K unicast forwarding database entries for the relevant switch platform.

Layer 3 Hardware Capabilities

In addition to Layer 2 switching, the CRS310 platform supports selected hardware-offloaded Layer 3 functions. This can be useful for networks that require basic inter-VLAN or routing functionality alongside high-speed switching.

However, the published performance figures should be interpreted according to the configuration being tested. Hardware switching throughput should not be treated as equivalent to unrestricted CPU-based routing performance. MikroTik’s published test results show substantially higher switching performance than the CPU-based fast-path routing figures under the specified test conditions.

High Switching Performance

The CRS310 has a published non-blocking Layer 2 switching result of approximately 45.4 Gbps at 1518-byte packets, with a corresponding Layer 1 capacity of approximately 92 Gbps under MikroTik’s test methodology. At smaller packet sizes, results vary according to packet processing requirements.

These figures represent manufacturer laboratory test results and should not be interpreted as guaranteed application throughput for every network configuration.

RouterOS v7 and SwitchOS

The CRS310-1G-5S-4S+IN supports RouterOS and SwitchOS. RouterOS provides the broader MikroTik networking environment, while SwitchOS is focused primarily on switch management and switching functionality.

RouterOS support enables features such as VLAN configuration, bridging, routing, firewall-related functions and other network-management capabilities, while hardware offloading can be used for supported switching operations.

The device carries a RouterOS Level 5 license. MikroTik’s current documentation supports RouterOS v6 and v7 or later, while the product page identifies RouterOS v7 / SwitchOS as the operating-system platform.

PoE-In for Flexible Installation

The CRS310 supports 802.3af/at PoE-in, providing an alternative method of powering the switch in suitable installations. It also has a dedicated DC power input supporting 18–57V DC.

PoE-in can be useful where the switch is installed in a location where running a separate local power adapter is inconvenient. The device supports a maximum power consumption of approximately 20W, while consumption without attachments is specified at approximately 8W.

Compact 1U Rackmount Design

The CRS310-1G-5S-4S+IN is designed for indoor network installations and can be mounted in a standard rack using the supplied rack ears. Its dimensions are approximately 200 × 166 × 44 mm.

The unit uses active cooling with one fan and is rated for an operating temperature range of -40°C to +70°C. The current MikroTik manual identifies the device as intended for indoor rackmount installation and specifies an IPX0 protection rating, so it should be installed in a dry, ventilated environment away from water and humidity.

MikroTik CRS310 for ISP Networks

The CRS310-1G-5S-4S+IN is well suited to small and medium ISP infrastructure where multiple Gigabit optical links need to be aggregated into a 10G network. Five 1G SFP ports can serve access or distribution links, while the four 10G SFP+ interfaces can provide higher-speed uplinks and aggregation connections.

Its hardware VLAN filtering, SFP/SFP+ connectivity, RouterOS support and compact rackmount design make it useful for fiber-based ISP and WISP infrastructure, especially where a cost-conscious 10G aggregation switch is required.

CRS310 for Enterprise and Business Networks

For enterprise and small-business deployments, the CRS310 can be used as a fiber distribution or aggregation switch. Typical applications include connecting server rooms, network cabinets, fiber uplinks, wireless infrastructure, security systems and remote buildings.

The combination of 1G and 10G optical interfaces also provides a practical migration path from Gigabit fiber networks toward 10 Gigabit aggregation.

CRS310 for Server and Storage Connectivity

The four 10G SFP+ interfaces can be used to connect compatible servers, storage systems and high-speed network switches. Depending on the installed transceiver or cable, the SFP+ interfaces can support appropriate optical or direct-attach connectivity.

For short rack connections, compatible SFP+ DAC or AOC cables can reduce cabling complexity. For longer connections, suitable single-mode or multimode optical modules and fiber infrastructure can be selected according to distance and network requirements.
